Networks Know That All Rivalries Aren’t Viewed Equally

Interleague
play begins today, and guess which two teams Fox and ESPN are featuring this
weekend? The Yankees and the Mets. It doesn’t matter if they’re at Shea Stadium
or at Yankee Stadium, or if both teams are great.

It wouldn’t matter if Roger Clemens were a Yankee or an
Astro.

And it
wouldn’t matter if Jeff Wilpon were playing third base for the Mets and Hank Steinbrenner
catching for the Yankees.

The
Yankees-Mets matchups remain the ones most coveted by the networks because they
attract more viewers than any other, including the Cubs-White Sox intracity
rivalry and the games featuring teams that are close geographically, like the Dodgers-Angels
and Giants-Athletics series.
