Casino Rama Curling Skins Game, on TSN in HD

The inaugural Casino Rama
Curling Skins Game airs live in High Definition on December 8 and 9 in three,
3-hour telecasts on TSN and TSN HD. It is the first North American-based
curling tournament to be produced and televised in HD.

The Casino Rama Curling
Skins Game is an annual all-Canadian event, which this year features the
popular rinks of Glenn Howard, Wayne Middaugh, Kevin Martin and Brad Gushue. The
event consists of two semifinals on Saturday, Dec. 8, with the winners
advancing to the final on Sunday, Dec. 9.

Casino Rama has built a
curling rink exclusively for this event in its 5,000-seat world-class
Entertainment Centre, marking the first time a Canadian casino has staged a
curling event. Hans Wuthrich, the head technician of the curling sheets at the
2010 Olympic Winter Games in

Vancouver
was hired to build a 16×150 ft. curling rink exclusively for the event.

To build the curling sheet
from scratch, Wuthrich and his crew will install a layer of plastic on the
Entertainment Centre’s floor, and then create the frame that will form the
shape of the ice’s surface. Once a frame is in place, the team will lay
in pipes, which act as the cooling system to keep the ice frozen. A layer
of sand is then poured to fill in spaces between the piping, and the framed
area is flooded and left to freeze. Once the ice is frozen, curling lines
and logos are painted on before another layer of water is poured and left to
freeze. The ice making process is scheduled to take four days, and a
CIMCO portable ice plant will be used to refrigerate the ice throughout the
event.

TSN’s curling broadcast team
includes Vic Rauter doing the play-by-play alongside analyst and former Brier
champion Ray Turnbull and analyst and Olympic gold medallist Linda Moore. The
Casino Rama Curling Skins Game represents the first year of a three-year
partnership between TSN and Casino Rama.
