Vivid Sky iPhone App Delivers For Sports Fans

By Ken Kerschbaumer

Vivid Sky, provider of technology designed to give sports fans in the stands access to replays, statistics, and more via handheld devices, has introduced an Application for the Apple iPhone that brings the fans closer to the action. “We’ve been waiting for this,” says Tim Hayden, Vivid Sky CEO of the
iPhone and its capabilities. “Whether it’s the iPhone, Blackberry
Storm, HTC or Android devices, we’re at the point when fans can bring
in their own devices.

In previous incarnations Vivid Sky has been available only on Vivid Sky devices within a venue. The devices are tied into the scoreboard video system and allow fans to change camera angles, have instant replays, and access to a wealth of statistics and data. The problem, however, is that getting the devices into the hands of all the fans is cost-prohibitive. But as phones, PDAs, and other consumer devices become more sophisticated Vivid Sky and other similar service providers can meet demand via downloads.

“We started out needing to provide ruggedized devices made for the military but we’re at the tipping point with people having their own devices,” says Hayden.

The new download for iPhone caps off an MLB season that saw VividSky technology find a believer in the St. Louis Cardinals. The franchise used the Vivid Sky device to bring a new level of service to corporate suites and the Championship Club. Busch Beer and St. Louis University were title sponsors for the Vivid Sky system that allowed for access to in-game data, instant replays as the system is tied into the stadium video system, informational graphics like pitch and hit location, and fan alerts. An interactive scoreboard allows users to se what is happening in other ballparks however the.

“The adoption of the devices is off the charts in the suites,” says Hayden. “Our ultimate goal is to figure out how to partner with leagues.”

The system was also used by the Detroit Red Wings this past season.
