NFL Draft Steals the Ratings Show with New Three-day Format

The NFL Draft’s new format proved to be a ratings victory, as ESPN is reporting a 27% boost in total audience compared to the 2009 Draft. The 3.7 million viewers for the three-day event was second only to the 2006 Draft. In addition, 2.85 million households watched the draft, up 24% from last year and just 2,000 less than the all-time high in 2006.

Even Day 3 notched solid ratings gains, as 10% more people tuned in for Rounds 4-7 than in 2009 (the final day was on Sunday in 2009).

Thursday night’s coverage of Round 1 marked the biggest win for NFL with a 6.42 rating (ESPN=5.47, NFL Network=0.95) that outdrew both NBA first round playoff games, which drew a 3.0 (Lakers vs. Thunder) and 2.1 (Cavaliers vs. Bulls), respectively.
