BBC UHD Trial Underway reports that the BBC has begun its Ultra High Definition (4k) closed trial of World Cup 2014 from DTT transmitters in London, Manchester and Glasgow.

BBC R&D has partnered with Arqiva for the trial that will also run over high-speed broadband.

In a blog post Phil Layton, head of Broadcast & Connected Systems, explained the UHD production will be received in the UK from an H.264/AVC contribution satellite feed. For Both DTT and IP the partners are using Main Profile HEVC to compress the video to distribution.
