Australia’s Telstra Partners With Aspera on Joint Media Networking Solution

IBM announced that Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications and media company, has partnered with Aspera, an IBM Company to deliver a jointly-built media networking solution with global reach that aims to facilitate video contribution and distribution enabling acceleration and simplification of content workflow in support of the multiplatform needs of broadcast and media organizations.

In response to increasing demand for high quality, low latency, highly available media content,  the new Telstra Digital Video Network (DVN) supports  an increased range of media content formats and access requirements including: Linear Video [4K, HD, SD, ASI, IP], File based media content, Media Data, and Itinerant pay-per-use services. Telstra DVN now provides additional value to customers by integrating Aspera into the solution, enabling customers to achieve secure, high performance and reliable media file transfers within their environments, within the Telstra DVN Media Community and to anywhere in the world.

This convergence of technologies will provide unique benefits to an extensive  customer base and support a wide variety of use cases, including ad hoc field-based contributions, inter-studio video sharing, inter-company content sharing, and automated file-based workflow processes. The solution will help organizations manage their real-time and non-real-time video and workflow requirements.

Aspera will be deployed within a Telstra hosting environment based in Australia and will be available in two editions of the Managed File Transfer application: (i) Web Edition; which offers a user interface designed for transfer and sharing of large files and directories, enabling user-to-user file transfers in a multi-tenanted environment; and the upcoming (ii) Server Edition, which offers a deeper workflow integration and supports advanced automated workflow tasks such as encoding, transcoding, watermarking, and content verification.

Boyd Faulkes, Director of Industry Solutions for Telstra Global Products and Solutions, said the partnership between the two powerful brands will provide the domestic Media & Entertainment market with a distinctive value proposition.

“Aspera is already a leading technology used in media community. Together with DVN’s high bandwidth connectivity and unmatched national footprint, it provides a highly compelling capability,” Faulkes said.

“The technical and business synergies between Telstra and Aspera enables customers in the media community to take advantage of Telstra’s infrastructure and its interconnected media community combined with Aspera’s high performance file transfer and workflow automation capabilities,” said John Wastcoat, vice president of business development at Aspera.
