Ericsson’s Research into HDR Wins Connected TV Award

Ericsson announced that its research into HDR in the HD/UHD broadcast chain and its HDR proof-of-concept with Intelsat was selected as the winner of the Videonet Connected TV Awards’ “Big Immersive TV Prize.” The awards recognize outstanding achievement in television services, technology, and advertising.Ericsson

Ericsson’s HDR research was first outlined in the 2015 NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference Proceedings in April 2015 where it received the Best Paper award. It investigates alternative transfer functions to support the transmission and rendering of HDR video signals and how they impact the efficiency of video compression used for content exchange, as well as delivery to the final user. The research reveals the bitrates required to provide HDR services using existing video compression technology.

HDR+ may be defined as the combination of HDR, Wider Color Gamut, and 10-bit sampling precision. Its benefits are that it delivers beautiful lifelike pictures that are not impacted by factors such as screen size or viewing distance from the TV, and it enables enhanced picture quality for HD and 4K UDH content without significant bandwidth increase.

At IBC 2015, Ericsson recently partnered with Intelsat to demonstrate the world’s first HD contribution feed in HDR using DVB-S2X and a non-proprietary workflow. By combining Intelsat’s satellite network with Ericsson’s vision and technological expertise, the partnership offers various technical and transmission options to improve current video quality.
